February 2012

Dear Vallecitos Families,

Starting Something New
Thanks to Vallecitos board member and parent, Michael Darnley, students in grades 4-6 will have an opportunity to participate in a brand new club.  The Science Club will be an enriching learning opportunity for our students, as they conduct science experiments and prepare for the San Diego County- wide Science Field Day.  The event provides students across the county with an opportunity to compete in fifteen different science competitions.  Event winners receive medals to proudly wear around campus.  This is the first year ever that Vallecitos students will participate in the Science Club and Science Field Day.  Students recently received flyers and had an opportunity to sign up for the club.  If you would like more information, please contact the front office.  A special thank you to Michael Darnley, our Science Club Coach.

Focusing on Student Learning
The ultimate goal of the Vallecitos teaching staff is to improve student learning.  Students recently completed the MAPS testing, which provides staff, students, and parents with a picture of how each student is progressing toward mastering the California state standards.  The teaching staff will also use the testing results to place students in intervention groups, as well as enhanced enrichment opportunities.  In addition to the MAPS testing, every parent and child receives a February Report Card, which is a comprehensive report of your child’s progress in school.  I strongly suggest that you understand your child’s current progress, and contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.  We will continue to explore ways to involve parents in the teaching and learning process, and we value your support and ideas.  Thank you!

Truancy Policy
I recently developed truancy letters, in an effort to promote and require regular and on time school attendance.  In addition to our board policy, the letters are meant to communicate what a truant is, and your responsibility as parents in requiring your child to attend school each day.  Parents will receive a letter from me if their child is considered a truant.  Parents can also be directed to a Student Attendance Review Board if a child’s attendance does not improve.  A truant is any student who is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof.  If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact the front office.

Thank you very much for your continued support of our classroom teachers and staff.  We encourage you to work with us to improve each student’s level of achievement.  If you need my support in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

David Jones
Superintendent
